How it works

Enter your waist circumference (measured at the narrowest point) and hip circumference (measured at the widest point). The tool divides waist by hip to get the WHR and maps it to a health risk category using World Health Organization thresholds, which differ by sex. A lower WHR (more "pear-shaped") is generally associated with lower cardiovascular risk than a higher WHR ("apple-shaped"). All calculation runs locally.

WHR = Waist circumference ÷ Hip circumference

Common use cases

  • Tracking fat distribution as a complement to BMI for cardiovascular health monitoring.
  • Understanding whether your body shape is associated with higher or lower metabolic risk.
  • Setting a waist reduction goal based on a target WHR category.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure waist and hip correctly?

Waist: measure at the narrowest point of the torso, usually about 1 inch above the navel. Hips: measure at the widest point around the buttocks. Stand relaxed and breathe normally.

What are the WHO thresholds?

For men: low risk < 0.90, moderate 0.90–0.95, high > 0.95. For women: low risk < 0.80, moderate 0.80–0.85, high > 0.85.

Is WHR better than BMI?

WHR and BMI measure different things. BMI reflects overall weight relative to height; WHR reflects fat distribution. Using both together gives a more complete picture of health risk.
